They thought they weren't learning...

The way Andrew and I have been teaching is new for our students.

It's new for us, for that matter.

It's not the Teacher Lectures and Student Studies the Textbook paradigm.  And our students really struggled with the transition.

So I decided to ask them what they were learning in my class.  We've been working on these three playlists.

I wasn't expecting much because it really seems like they weren't "getting it" and making the right connections.

Here were the results for the topic:

What are you learning in this class?  What do you think we want you to know/be able to do?

Sorry it's not super legible.  The check marks indicate when another group said something that was already up there.

I'm really proud of them.

They ARE learning! :-)

I just finished my 3rd week of my first flipped classroom and was feeling just like you that my students weren't getting it. They were very frustrated with all the technology or rather HOW they were to use the technology. I had a conversation with them asking what was the most overwhelming aspect of it all. The answer was that the technology was frustrating. It added another element to their learning. My kids already struggle with English literacy skills and now they were adding media literacy. However they said they did not want to go back to the traditional method of teaching and they felt my class was allowing them to learn things at their own pace. They said once they could master the technology they believe learning English will be easier.

I have also noticed them making personal connections. They are also more eager to see me for help so their verbal outburst of frustration is actually an act of acknowledging that they really do want to learn rather than be passive regurgitators of information.

In my opinion, it is always better to invent new methods to teach the students. The educational system needs further change. It is not about incorporating more technology in teaching, but about new methodologies to teach and make the students learn more.
